AM4 is a AMD motherboard socket for Ryzen processors (Zen, Zen+, Zen 2 and Zen 3) launched in 2016. It has 1331 pins. AM4 platforms use DDR4 memory. AM4 motherboards are typically only compatible with a limited number of processors designed for the AM4 socket out of the box, namely those common at the time the motherboard was launched. Additional processor compatibility can usually be unlocked by updating the BIOS. Older AM4 boards have one x16 PCIe 3.0 slot (capable of being split into two x8 slots) and PCIe 2.0 for the rest of the PCIe slots. Newer 5xx series boards have one PCIe 4.0 x16 slot and PCIe 3.0 connectivity to the rest of the PCI express slots.

AMD will likely replace AM4 with something else to allow features like DDR5 memory support in 2021.
