A cookie (HTTP cookie) is a parcels of text stored in web browsers by web servers which is used for purposes such as advertisement tracking, authenticating, storing site preferences, and so on.

[edit] Why avoid cookies

Some cookies are used to keep track of who are logged in. Some websites (like this one) require you to allow cookies in order to login. These cookies are good. Well, perhaps not good, but they are acceptable.

Other cookies are only used to keep track of which advertisements you have viewed, or worse, what your interests are. These cookies are evil.
